Cold Weather Benefits Texas Growers

An unseasonably cold winter in South Texas, though unsettling for many residents, has been uplifting for the region’s fruit and citrus growers.

Frosty temperatures that reintroduced natives to warm clothing were not severe enough to damage the Rio Grande Valley’s citrus crop, but they produced the chilliness that peach and fruit crops crave.

Everything looks absolutely fine, said Jim Kamas, a fruit specialist with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service in Fredericksburg. We’re probably set up for the best crop I’ve seen.

Kamas, who has been at his regional post for 15 years, said it’s been about five years since growers had what he described a reasonable crop and 10 since they had a good crop.
