The commercial scalloping season is off to a slow start, with scallopers reporting Monday and Tuesday that it took them until early afternoon to reach their limits and scallops were scarce due to a lack of eelgrass in places that were once abundant.
“It was pretty bad from the looks of things,” scalloper Blair Perkins said. “There were some scallops around, but many are covered up in heavy weed. It might be one of those years when you’re happy with three to four boxes in December, hopefully yielding a decent price. I got 10 boxes today (Monday) in Madaket, but it took me until noon after looking around a bit first.”
Jeff Henderson, who scallops and also sells the succulent shellfish through his seafood company at Bartlett’s Farm, said it took him until 1 p.m. to reach his limit on Monday. He fished in the harbor area in front of the Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum.
