National Milk Producers Federation Studies Possible Geographical Indication Effect In US

The National Milk Producers Federation has contracted a study that the group hopes will demonstrate just how damaging it would be if the U.S. ever agrees to European Union demands that companies here conform to its system of restricting geographical-based food names. U.S. dairy-product makers of disputed cheese names like Parmesan, Gouda, Havarti, mozzarella and feta fear that losing the ability to call their products Parmesan, Gouda, Havarti, mozzarella and feta would be disastrous, National Milk Producers Federation Senior Vice President Jaime Castaneda told POLITICO. The group hopes to have the study done early next year as ammunition for lawmakers and trade negotiators in Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership discussions.
