NAMI submitted two sets of comments to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding proposed revisions to the nutrition facts label on food products. The Meat Institute affirmed its support for efforts to provide accurate and appropriate nutritional information to help consumers to decide which foods best fit within their lifestyles. The comments, however, urged FDA to follow a measured, deliberative approach, like the one used by the Institute of Medicine, when establishing Daily Reference Values (DRV) and discouraged the vilification of single nutrients. Failure to do so could lead to adverse unintended consequences. NAMI also opposed including 'added sugars' on the Nutrition Facts label, and instead called for using the term 'total sugars' in the final rule. The Meat Institute comments supported the Nutrition Facts label's concise footnote language, stating it would avoid unnecessary resource expenditures, and stressed the importance of educating consumers about the percent Daily Value, the footnote, individual caloric needs and overall diet implications of the changes.
