Marin's Rustic Bakery Supplies Pope With Organic Goodies During US Visit

Marin residents have long enjoyed the organic artisanal goodies from Rustic Bakery, including San Rafael’s George Lucas and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom of Kentfield. Now the San Rafael-based company has a new fan — Pope Francis.

Since arriving in the United States on Sept. 22, the pope has been nibbling on Rustic’s two biggest sellers, the olive oil sel gris sourdough flatbread and the pecan-cranberry-rosemary pan forte crostini, in-flight as he and his Vatican delegation have traveled from Washington, D.C., to New York and to Philadelphia before he departs for home Sunday.

“We’ve been just overwhelmed from the excitement of our flatbread crackers and crostini on the flight for the pope,” co-owner Carol LeValley said in a voicemail from Canada, where she is vacationing with her business partner and husband, Josh Harris.
