Longtime high-end area grocery chain Randall’s has found itself squeezed out by competition in recent years. Randall’s Food Markets, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and Fiesta Mart all compete in the wealthiest counties in America, according to a data table by Time.
Using nationwide retail data, Time evaluated 2,996 chains by looking at “the median income of the counties where stores are located.”
Randall’s, which has closed some 30 Houston-area stores in recent years, operates in counties where median incomes ($66,318) are far above the 2013 U.S. median income of $52,250. But the chain has struggled against competition like Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods that also serve the wealthiest American incomes.
