Jerry Lanzerotti, owner of Lyndhurst Pastry Shop, said he won’t be raising the prices of his baked goods anytime soon, even though his egg costs have doubled in recent months.
“We decided to take the hit,” said Lanzerotti. “My competitors are ShopRite and all that. It’s hard to raise your prices. You don’t want to raise yourself out of the market.”
Other North Jersey businesses share Lanzerotti’s dilemma. They are bearing the brunt of the nation’s worst-ever bird-flu outbreak, which has killed more than 48 million fowl through mid-June, pushing egg prices up 31 percent to a record $2.57 for a dozen large eggs in June, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Consumers paid just $1.96 in May. Some businesses are absorbing the higher costs, while others are passing along the rising expense of eggs to customers.
