Prince Edward Island Potato Farmers To Host PEI Potato Social August 9th

CHARLOTTETOWN, PE  –  As a way to thank fellow Islanders and potato-loving visitors for their support in the past year, the potato growers of Prince Edward Island are hosting the first ever Prince Edward Island Potato Social on Sunday, August 9th, 2015.  The PEI Potato Social will be held from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at Monaghan Farms at 2302 Route 2 in Norboro (near Kensington).

Central to the event will be a free barbeque lunch, which will include hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, baked potatoes, and other treats.  In order to ensure sufficient food is prepared, those planning to attend are asked to register for free tickets to the event at pei-potato-social.eventbrite.ca.  Due to the number of people expected to attend, tickets reserved in advance will be necessary in order to be served food at the PEI Potato Social.

Additional features of the PEI Potato Social will include farm equipment displays, live entertainment, and activities for children, including making Mr. Potato Heads from real potatoes, photo booths, and a bouncy castle.  This is a family-friendly event and people of all ages are invited to attend.  The main objective of the event is to allow Island potato farmers and members of the public to chat informally, talk about farming, and enjoy the day.

Alex Docherty, Chairman of the PEI Potato Board, notes that “we had some growers that approached us about finding a way to thank our local community for their ongoing support, particularly after the past year.  We are excited about hosting a big party that celebrates Prince Edward Island Potatoes and allows Islanders and visitors alike to meet the folks who grow their potatoes!”

Derrick Curley of Monaghan Farms adds that “we are happy to host the first PEI Potato Social.  We think that it’s a great opportunity to show members of the public how we grow potatoes as well as thanking them for their support of our industry.”
