WV-Sourced Food Is In High Demand If Farms Can Clear Regulatory Hurdles

CHARLESTON — The demand is there.

West Virginia consumers spend about $7 billion annually on food products, according to figures from the West Virginia Department of Agriculture.

But West Virginia farmers and growers are providing less than $1 billion of that to their own neighbors, a statistic often noted by Walt Helmick, state agriculture commissioner.

Supplying more of that demand in-state is an opportunity for economic growth that the Mountain State cannot afford to miss out on, he says.
