How Latinos Are Changing The Supermarket, Bakery Landscape In Kankakee

Every morning, employees at Mexican bakeries around the area wake up and get to work, trying to beat the sunrise. Once there, they start the process to create doughnuts, cookies and sweet bread that comes in all shapes and colors.

As the ovens begin to run, the small work areas soon become very hot, but the sweet aroma that fills is a trophy for the workers, and a delicacy for the people who walk in looking to buy a companion for their daily coffee.

"I love the smell. The sweetness, man!" said Nicholas Guardiola with a big smile while shopping at El Guero Bakery.
