LUBBOCK, TX — In honor of National Dairy Month in June, The United Family is debunking the most common milk myths, while educating guests about one of nature’s most nutrient-packed foods.
A United Family registered dietitian is available to discuss the below milk myths during an in-studio segment, for which she is able to bring various dairy products as a visual.
The registered dietitian can detail the following common misconceptions about milk:
· Almond milk and coconut milk are healthier than cow’s milk
- While almond milk is gluten and soy-free, it is lacking all 9 essential vitamins offered by cow’s milk.
- Cow’s milk is a natural nutritional powerhouse, comprised of 9 nutrients: protein, calcium, niacin, potassium, phosphorus, riboflavin and vitamins A, D and B12.
· Lactose-intolerance means all dairy is off-limits
- While many individuals with lactose-intolerance completely cut dairy out of their diet, they can often still enjoy dairy foods in moderation.
- To continue fueling your body with calcium and protein, lactose-intolerant individuals should consider dairy products that are low in lactose and therefore easier to digest, such as natural cheeses, yogurt, lactose-free milk and more
· Milk isn’t as healthy as whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables
- An 8 ounce serving of regular or chocolate milk offers as much….
- Vitamin A as 2 hardboiled eggs
- Phosphorous as 1 cup of kidney beans
- Calcium as 10 cups of raw spinach
- Potassium as one small banana
- Vitamin D as 3/4 ounce of cooked salmon
- Ribovlavin as 1/3 cup of whole almonds
