The scallop population from Weeki Wachee to Citrus County is now classified at "vulnerable" levels, according to the annual Florida Bay scallop report from the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Some local businesses and charter captains fear the scallop season could be altered or shortened.
"I hate to hear it I really do that would really devastate a lot of us," said Rick Burns, who has owned and operated Reel Burns Charters in Homosassa for 15 years and depends on the late June to September scallop season to make ends meet.
