As Haggen continues its takeovers of 146 Albertsons and Safeway stores throughout the West Coast as part of the largest grocery divestiture in U.S. history, many have marveled at the speed with which the conversions take place.
For instance, just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, the Lake Oswego Albertsons seemed to be operating as usual. But at 4 p.m. that Thursday – after a temporary closure – the store opened as a Haggen store, new sign and all.
Haggen has to convert the stores quickly because it only has 120 days to complete the takeovers, and executives have chosen to focus special attention on branding and perishables as they convert stores.
