Patrick Cudahy is planning a $12 million expansion of its bacon manufacturing in a soon-to-be rebuilt portion of its Cudahy meatpacking plant that was destroyed by a massive fire in 2009.
The new portion of the plant is expected to be fully operational by December, according to a statement from Smithfield Foods, parent company of Patrick Cudahy. The 17,000-square-foot plant expansion will include four slicing lines that will increase Smithfield's bacon capacity by about 10 million pounds, according to the statement.
A Smithfield spokeswoman said additional details on the expansion will be released on Thursday after a groundbreaking ceremony is held at the site. The event is scheduled for 11 a.m.
