First, Bottom Dollar shut its doors, and now Good Cents is closing. A shake-out of sorts is reshaping the Pittsburgh grocery market — at least the discount end of it.
O’Hara-based Giant Eagle, a full-service grocer and convenience store operator that began testing the discount waters around when the Great Recession hit, announced Wednesday that it will be closing all eight of the stores that it has been operating in Pennsylvania and Ohio under the name Good Cents Grocery + More.
More than 200 employees at the stores, including about 35 at the McKnight Road location — the only Good Cents store in the Pittsburgh region — were notified Wednesday that the locations would close by March 26, according to the company.
