AFE has released a new research report: Special Research Report #136: Disease Management Coleus Cultivars and Downy Mildew.
This research — conducted by Margery Daughtry, Blair Harlan, Sheila Linderman and Mary Hausbeck of Cornell University and Michigan State University — analyzes the tolerance of coleus cultivars to downy mildew. A cultivar is a plant variety that has been produced in cultivation by selective breeding. The coleus plant is prized by gardeners for its bright, colorful foliage and is often used as a houseplant.
Researchers examined 147 different types of seed and cutting-propagated coleus in greenhouses or outdoor containers between 2006 and 2013. Symptoms of downy mildew on coleus include brown leaf spots, leaf drop, stunting and leaf curl.
