Tampa's La Segunda Bakery Warming Up For Its Next Century

TAMPA — For 100 years, the smell of freshly baked Cuban bread has been the signature of La Segunda Central Bakery in Ybor City.

As the bakery enters its next century, a new generation of family owners smells money in the opportunity to leverage La Segunda's brand power and lengthy loaves — crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside — by expanding its main wholesale business, opening a more visible retail location, and even spinning off into cafes.

The celebration of a century will last all year and include some well-known customers of the bakery at 2512 N. 15th St. “We do not have a specific day to celebrate, but at the end of April we are planning a big celebration with a proclamation of local elected officials,” said Copeland Moré, 32, part of the fourth generation of family ownership.
