DEMING – Preferred Produce, an organic and kosher greenhouse south of Deming, received a major showing of support from officials with Luna County, the state of New Mexico and other entities, for its planned expansion.
Secretary John Barela, of New Mexico's Economic Development Department, delivered the keynote speech at the event Friday at the greenhouses south of Deming. He was joined by local officials, Preferred Produce employees, and other interested citizens to show support for ongoing efforts to finalize a Local Economic Development Act package with the grower. The LEDA funding, about $135,000, will help the company begin an expansion and purchase heating and cooling equipment for the facilities.
"We came out here two years ago and to see how it's grown is just unbelievable," State Rep. Dona Irwin, D-Deming, told the crowd, noting the organic tomatoes, "Are to die for."
