Maintaining high product quality and consistency is vital to success in the global seafood industry. Throughout 2014, the Provincial Government's Inspection Program conducted approximately 2,500 inspections to ensure that wild and farmed seafood products are handled and processed in compliance with provincial legislation.
"By supporting best practices for handling, holding, and transportation of seafood products, the Provincial Government's Inspection Program protects the reputation of provincial seafood in world markets. Our highly trained inspection staff and rigorous inspection protocols help ensure our provincial seafood will consistently meet the standards and expectations of consumers throughout the world."
– The Honourable Vaughn Granter, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture
Since 2007, fish inspectors have been undergoing advanced training that involves numerous aspects of fish inspection and regulation enforcement. The Quality, Compliance and Enforcement Program is an advanced diploma training program administered through College of the North Atlantic to ensure fish inspectors throughout the province have the knowledge and skills that are necessary to most effectively enforce quality assurance protocols. By June 2015, six more inspectors will have graduated from the program, bringing the total number of graduated inspectors to 14.
The inspections carried out each year pertain to raw product requirements; handling and holding conditions on vessels, trailers and unloading sites; and point of export inspections.
