In the wake of an undercover video operation that caused a New Mexico dairy to shut down over allegations of animal abuse, Leprino Foods has announced new animal care standards for all the dairy co-ops that supply its cheese plants with milk.
According to the Lemoore Chamber of Commerce, Leprino’s two dairy-processing facilities in Lemoore employ more than 1,200 people, making it one of Kings County’s largest private employers. An unknown number of local dairies supply milk to Leprino through milk co-ops.
A New Mexico dairy shut down in September after an operative for a group called Mercy for Animals videotaped workers whipping cows with chains and metal wires, shocking them in the genitals and stabbing them with screwdrivers, among other things. The dairy supplied milk to a co-op that supplied Leprino.
