San Jose's Sultan Bakery – A Specialist In Pita Breads

Not long ago a factory quietly opened in San Jose, just a block from Coleman Avenue's bustling San Jose Market Center. The factory doesn't make widgets or computer chips, though. Instead, its products are attractive, wholesome and downright delicious.

Sultan Bakery, on Stockton Avenue at Taylor Street, calls itself a factory right on the signage over the entrance. That's because every day the shiny industrial equipment inside turns out thousands of soft, fragrant pita breads, that staple of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisines.

Although the 2,600-square-foot building has been creating pitas for the past several years, most of them were destined for restaurants and other wholesalers. This September, Sultan opened to the public as well. In addition to the pitas it now offers dozens of other items, from rolls and savory pocket pies to baklava and a variety of cookies. Everything is made on site.
