Dairy industry marketing has turned “Got milk?” into a fairly ubiquitous slogan, but it’s a question organic farmers have difficulty answering.
Industry experts have tried to explain the cause of a recent organic milk shortage with theories about more expensive feed, state and federal subsidies for corn-based ethanol production and bad weather in the Midwest, but ask an organic dairy farmer and they’re likely to say not one factor is to blame.
Warren Taylor, a self-proclaimed “dairy nerd” and owner of Snowville Creamery in Pomeroy, Ohio, claims he has unparalleled insight into the industry and offers up his own explanation for the shortage: it’s politics.
