BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Nursery & Landscape Association (VNLA), the state trade association for garden centers, nursery growers, landscape designers, installation and maintenance contractors, greenhouses and horticultural suppliers joins other organizations to celebrate October as "Fall is for Planting Month."

"We are proud to support Governor McAullife's proclamation of October as 'Fall is for Planting Month'," VNLA Executive Director, Jeff Miller, said. "The benefits Virginians will see from planting reach far beyond aesthetics; you are positively impacting and improving the region both financially and environmentally."
VNLA seeks to share their passion for enhancing the environment by promoting and strengthening the Green Industry while keeping Virginia green and growing. This passion aligns perfectly with the proclamation set forth by Governor Terry McAullife earlier this month.
The Governor's announcement helps to make all Virginia citizens aware that fall is the best time to plant trees, shrubs and perennials due to the cooler temperatures, warm soil, increased rainfall and decreased number of insects and pests.
Environmental benefits of planting trees and plants include a healthy environment, cleaner air and reduced storm water runoff. October is one of the best months of the year to receive these benefits, because planting stock before Thanksgiving allows the plant ample time to develop roots to survive the upcoming summer.
Financially, Virginia benefits from those consumers who purchase trees, shrubs and perennials in-state. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the greenhouse and nursery industry ranks as Virginia's sixth largest agricultural commodity, with 290 commercial plant growers generating $272 million in sales and $1.2 billion in landscaping, installation and maintenance revenue annually.
