Dairy Industry Losing War As Milk Consumption Falls

Chiquita L. Gebo said she drinks a glass of milk only “once in a blue moon,” usually mixing it with chocolate syrup.

The 60-year-old Watertown resident, who was shopping at the Great American Food Store one day last week, said her beverage of choice is water flavored with Crystal Light.

“I’ll also drink milk when I eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, but that doesn’t happen much,” Mrs. Gebo said.

Her dismissal of milk as an everyday drink is shared by a growing number of Americans, according to statistics from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
