This summer, we'll (The Record) be spotlighting locally produced foods and drinks that have caught the attention of North Jersey's chefs, bartenders and other tastemakers.
When I am particularly wowed by restaurant bread and inquire about the source, two bakeries come up frequently. One is the familiar Englewood institution Balthazar. The other: Hudson Bread of North Bergen.
Hudson's breads, crusty and deep with flavor, include many so rustic that I might have expected them to come out of a little mom-and-pop hearth oven. I knew better only because I've driven past the massive Hudson Bread headquarters on Tonnelle Avenue — and wondered about the adjacent "Hudson Bread Sports" sign.
