The 2014 Minnesota Legislature passed a bill that affects nursery stock labeling and advertising regarding pollinators. Here is the action paragraph in the bill, which will be added to the "Labeling and Advertising of Nursery Stock" section of Minnesota's Nursery Law and is effective as of July 1st.
"A person may not label or advertise an annual plant, bedding plant, or other plant, plant material, or nursery stock as beneficial to pollinators if the annual plant, bedding plant, plant material or nursery stock has been treated with and has a detectable level of systemic insecticide that (1) has a pollinator protection box on the label; or (2) has a pollinator, bee, or honey bee precautionary statement in the environmental hazards section of the insecticide product label."
MNLA sent a short series of questions to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), the agency tasked with enforcing this new law. Attached are the questions and MDA's answers to those questions. MDA is aware that there will be many more questions. Members should e-mail additional questions to mda.nursery@state.mn.us.
