WESTTOWN — A dairyman and partners have launched the first on-farm milk-processing plant Orange County has seen since the 1990s.
The usual ways for farmers to market their milk are to sell directly to a wholesaler, or form a cooperative with other farmers and negotiate a group price from the processor.
Farmer Michael O'Dell and his partners, Rose and Lee Hubbert, think they've found a better way. They eliminate middlemen by processing milk in a new building on the O'Dell farm, then selling it locally. There are also plans to give New York City farm-to-table enthusiasts a taste at the city's Greenmarkets.
