WASHINGTON, DC — Status of U.S. Fisheries 2013 highlights the continued success of the investment in NOAA’s regulatory work. The report demonstrates that U.S. fisheries are sustainable due to the framework Congress created in the Magnuson Stevens Act. The report shows what can be done when Congress works with a broad array of stakeholders to develop sensible, science-based and responsible fisheries management systems.
A hallmark of this report, and so many of the ones that have come before it, is demonstrable progress. NOAA’s fisheries management model and the agency’s oversight works, as the increase in rebuilt stocks illustrates.
