Higher prices have hit the loading docks of local supermarkets as record-high national beef prices trickle down to Great Falls, but some stores are tightening their own belts to keep customers happy.
“It’s going up fast, not jumping up a little bit, it’s taking big steps,” Jim Kula, 2J’s meat manager, said of the price he pays for beef. “Since the last of March ’til now, our cost is up nearly 20 percent maybe, especially on premium cuts.”
He said the increases in some cases translate to “a couple of dollars a pound” the store pays for its meat.
But Kula said “We haven’t done anything” with prices. “We’re absorbing it for the moment and trying to buy in volume so (wholesalers) will work with us.”
