Grocery Chains Donate More Than $1 Million To Privatizing Oregon’s Liquor System

Grocery giants Fred Meyer and Safeway have donated more than $1 million to the campaign to privatize liquor sales in Oregon, according to online election records updated Monday by the Secretary of State’s Office.

Safeway gave $656,500 divided into two committee donations of $328,250 to Oregonians for Competition, which is organizing multiple ballot initiatives aimed at dismantling Oregon’s Liquor Control Commission in favor of a tax system and private sales.

Fred Meyer donated $500,000, which was also spread across two committee donations. Earlier this month, the Oregon-based grocery chain donated $500,000 to the campaign.
