TYLER, Texas — Tyler, Texas-based grocery chain Brookshire Grocery Co. today hosted its first ever Local Growers Appreciation Luncheon recognizing farmers who help supply produce to BGC stores throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
The luncheon was held at the BGC corporate headquarters and was catered by Brookshire’s. Texas Agricultural Commissioner Todd Staples was the guest speaker, and addressed the audience on the importance of agriculture to the U.S. economy. Approximately 30 local farmers attended the event, which also included a tour of the BGC distribution facilities and some retail stores.
“We are excited to celebrate the partnership we enjoy with local farmers and honor those who play a key role in helping us maintain our strong, positive reputation with our customers,” said BGC President and CEO Rick Rayford. “We work with more than 50 local suppliers in our three-state trade area to sell more than 12 million pounds of locally-grown produce annually. Working with these growers not only supports the economy in each community, but provides customers in the company’s 152 stores with the freshest quality produce available.”
A highlight of the luncheon was the recognition of Jacksonville Best Tomato Company’s David Claiborne, who was named Grower of the Year and received a commemorative plaque and travel voucher.
