WESTBY, Wis. – Hidden Springs Creamery’s signature mixed milk farmstead cheese recently earned a top spot in the March Madness of American cheese, placing in the Sweet 16 of top cheeses at the 2014 World Championship Cheese Contest.
Meadow Melody Grande, a raw milk cheese handcrafted by cheesemaker Brenda Jensen at her Wisconsin sheep dairy, earned a gold medal and scored high enough to compete in the prestigious final round at the world’s largest technical cheese contest. Meadow Melody Grande is a washed-rind cheese cave-aged for more than eight months. It has a creamy texture, grassy and toffee-like notes, and is similar to a young Manchego.
Two additional Hidden Springs Creamery cheeses claimed medals at the contest. Farmstead Feta earned a silver medal in the Soft & Semi Soft Sheep’s Milk Cheese Category, while Meadow Melody Reserve, crafted in a smaller wheel and aged longer than the Grande style, earned a silver medal in the Hard Mixed Milk Cheeses category.
The World Championship Cheese Contest is the largest technical evaluation of cheese and butter in the world. This year, 2,615 entries from 22 countries were entered into 90 categories.
