The Houseplant of the month of March is the Hydrangea. This plant brings spring into the home, with its extravagant shapes and eye-catching colours.
The Hydrangea and spring
Woody branches with dark green leaves and star shaped flower petals; that is the Hydrangea. These flowers are available in red, purple, pink, white, blue and green, colours which make it easy to associate the Hydrangea with the coming spring. There are different types of Hydrangeas such as the well-known ‘mophead’ ball shaped plants, lace cap flowers, bi-coloured and perpetually flowering types. They are grown from mini pots with one flower, up to large pots with a great sea of flowers and are available from January to August.
From Asia and South America
The Hydrangea originates from Asia and South America. The English botanist Sir Joseph Banks, after a long journey at the end of the eighteenth century, brought the Hydrangea for the first time to Europe. The plant was given a place in Kew Gardens in London and quickly became popular. Nowadays the Hydrangea is available as both an indoor plant and an outdoor plant.
