LOS ALAMITOS, CA – Purple fruits and vegetables reign during the spring holidays as shoppers search for unique ingredients for hosting Mardi Gras parties, observing Lent, or celebrating Easter.
"Purple definitely pops in the produce department, as well as on the plate, and this is the time of the year when purple truly is the color of the season," said Karen Caplan, President and CEO of Frieda's Specialty Produce. “Many people go meatless during Lent, and they will be looking for a variety of fruits and vegetables to keep their meals exciting. Specialty items are perfect to help them with this observance.”
Frieda's products make going meatless easy for shoppers, who observe Lent from March 5 through April 19, with Frieda's Soyrizo™, SoyTaco™, Organic Polenta, in-demand Sunchokes®, and the Yves Veggie Cuisine line of vegetarian products. Add some colors with featured purple ingredients like Okinawan Sweet Potato, Purple Potato, Graffiti Eggplants, and Purple Kohlrabi. Latin specialties like Jicama, Cactus Pads, Malanga Lila, and fresh and dried Chiles are also popular during Lent.
The spring holidays begin with Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, on March 4. Frieda's recommends produce in the traditional colors of purple, green, and gold, which makes for a beautiful merchandising opportunity, attractive to shoppers. Stock up on Purple, Green, and Orange Cauliflower and Baby Cauliflower, Radicchio, Cherimoya, Baby Green Artichokes, Gold Beets, Meyer Lemons, and Frieda's Dried Blackeyed Peas.
April 20th brings the Easter celebration with all of the colors and fresh produce of spring. Frieda's offers Sangria and Fiore Viola Artichokes, Baby Rainbow Carrots, Spring Garlic, Spring Onion, Fennel, Raisins on the Vine, Pearl Onions, and the seasonal favorite, Easter egg-like Pepino Melons.
