New England Shrimp Season Kicks Off

PORTLAND Hopes are high as New Englands northern shrimp fishing season kicks off.

Shrimp provide an alternative fishery in the winter months for boats that normally fish for haddock, flounder and other bottom-dwelling fish.

With a strong shrimp resource in the Gulf of Maine, regulators have set a 180-day season, which starts Tuesday and ends May 29.

Shrimp processors say the market for the shrimp should be better than last year, when sluggish demand drove prices down.
