Florida Farmers Say They Hope Freeze Damage To Vegetables Is Limited

Temperatures plummeted to 27 degrees in Belle Glade early Sunday and frost formed in the agricultural fields of western Palm Beach County, causing possible crop damage.

Rick Roth, owner of Roth Farms in Belle Glade, said he recorded a low temperature of 28 in his fields, where he has about 1,000 acres planted with leafy vegetables, mostly lettuces.

“We got patchy frost and some ice,” Roth said. “It is the Romaine lettuce that is particularly vulnerable and where we are most likely to see some damage.”
