Lining up in regimented rows is great for soldiers, but not for shrubs! You’ll find that many big box stores do just that – group shrubs by variety and line them up – because nobody has told them how to merchandise them. But independent garden centers have more leeway and more desire to do something different. Cultivating good relationships with IGC owners and managers can ultimately move a lot of inventory … and you’ll have a lot of fun doing it!
Start sparking ideas right in your nursery. Create a display mixing old favorites and bold new varieties. Throw in a few annuals or perennials to spice things up, if you like. If you sell to rewholesalers, suggest they follow your lead using your products or offer to create and install a design yourself. If you supply a chain store and they give you permission, create a similar design there.
