New Blooms For 2014

I think most gardeners look forward to the plant and seed catalogs that arrive in our mailboxes this time of year.  Winter gives us time to peruse those catalogs and see what is new and what plants we covet for our gardens.  Here are a just a few new annuals and perennials that caught my eye and that you may see this spring when you are out plant shopping.

Plant breeders have come up with some very interesting colors and patterns in petunias.  ‘Rose & Shine’ petunia looks like a pinwheel with black cherry and cream-colored stripes.  This petunia forms mounding to trailing plants ideal for beds and planters.  ‘Cha-Ching Cherry’ has cherry-red flowers with a creamy-yellow star pattern and light yellow center.  ‘Crazytunia Star Jubilee’ has a bright yellow star marked with an almost black border.  ‘Martha Washington’ features a double bloom of deep pink with a pale rose throat and a deep pink “bud” in the center, a very unique form for a petunia that will be the talk of your flower bed.

Looking for single colored petunias?  ‘Trilogy Blue’ is a deep purple that looks like velvet.  ‘Espresso Grande White’ is a pure white petunia with a large flower.  Petunia Surfinia ‘Heavenly Blue’ has abundant, wavy-petalled lavender-blue flowers.  ‘Cascadias Indian Summer’ has attractive shades of yellow to orange, all on one plant.  Supertunia ‘Orchid Charm’ offers miniature flowers that are a soft pinkish-purple with deep plum veins while ‘Supertunia Flamingo’ has pink flowers with deep rose veins.
