South-American flower export bastion Ecuador is steadily branching out into new markets, recent news reports suggest, decreasing its dependence on key market the U.S.
While the United States remains the most important market for Ecuadorian flowers by far (worth $400 million in 2012), the world’s third-largest flower exporter also exports to many other countries further abroad. The Netherlands, Russia, Canada, Ukraine, Spain and Italy are prominent ones, but more and more smaller markets are being developed as well.
Ecuadorian flower exports to the United Arab Emirates, for example, have increased by 86% over the course of 2013; from $390.000 in 2012 to $726.000 now. “The UAE is one of the key destinations in the Middle East for Ecuadorian products. We are aiming to further increase our exports of traditional products to the country as it has generated major revenues”, Hussam Hassan, head of the Ecuadorian Trade Office in Dubai, explains.
