YAOUNDE, Cameroon–Demand for cocoa beans threatens to outstrip supply for a second year, the executive director of the International Cocoa Organization said in an interview aired Sunday.
Executive Director Jean Marc Anga said demand exceeded production by about 160,000 metric tons for the 2012-13 season. He blamed poor harvests and expressed doubt that this year's crop would make up the gap. The growing season runs from October through September.
"This means we have less cocoa that should be processed by industries, and it signifies that demand for cocoa beans will be high in the coming years," Anga said in an interview aired Sunday by state-run Cameroon Radio Television.
