STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — While Staten Islanders pack it in for the night after the evening news, action in the fish world ignites. And, borough residents who work in the business are just getting ready for work.
At the New Fulton Fish Market, a massive refrigerated shed located on a desolate, dead end in the Bronx, the hullabaloo begins around midnight.
Hilo forklifts zip back and forth, pulling palettes of fish from cavernous coolers and sliding them onto the concrete floor. Soon, boxes of red snapper and assorted clams will be purchased by “541 Fulton Dock” — the nickname for a buyer from Seabreeze Fish based on where he parks his truck — and shipped to Met Foods in Castleton Corners and the Island’s Top Tomato stores. In about one hour, spiny sea urchins and frozen king crab legs will be snapped up for La Bella Marketplace in Tottenville.
