Canadian Lamb Producers Get $1.4M For New Grading System

REGINA — Canadian lamb producers will receive $1.4 million from the federal government to develop and implement a new meat grading system, Michelle Rempel, minister of state for Western Economic Diversification, announced in Regina Friday.

The computer indexing and grading protocol will provide the newly-formed Canadian Lamb Producers Co-operative access to data that will ultimately lead to increased farm cash receipts through improved flock genetics, better feed management practices and reduced operating costs, the federal agency said.

The project assists Canada’s lamb industry in attracting the domestic market, as well as increasing traceability, which is crucial for exporting Canadian lamb to international markets. “Strengthening Canada’s lamb industry leads to overall economic growth and long-term prosperity for farmers,” Rempel said.
