Syracuse, NY — At 80 years old, Syracuse-based Byrne Dairy just can't help reinventing itself.
Ten years ago, with people drinking less milk, Byrne decided the only way to boost sales was to expand its territory. But you couldn't ship milk and cream all around the country if it only stayed fresh for 20 days.
So it built a $13 million ultra-pasteurization plant in DeWitt. Its products can last 70 days.
The move has opened the country. Byrne became a milkman for a nation, growing its territory went from four states to 35. It stocks hundreds of Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores around the United States.
