THE public has been told to tuck into fish suppers “with a clear conscience” after it emerged that cod numbers in the North Sea have grown so much that the fish are eating too many other species.
In addition, fishing quota cuts which were imposed to preserve cod – which until a few years ago faced extinction – could actually be harming the North Sea, according to marine scientists.
Boats have been tied up because of catch restrictions brought in amid fears over dangerously low stocks, and fishermen are again facing EU proposals to cut the amount they are allowed to catch.
