On Tuesday, Frank Budwey, owner of Budwey’s Super Market, made the announcement that he would be selling Budwey’s to Olean Wholesale Grocery Cooperative. According to Budwey’s, the deal is not finalized, but is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Olean Wholesale supplies stores, like Budwey’s, with grocery items, health and beauty products, frozen foods and frozen meats, deli products and more.
Budwey stated that he intended to keep all of his employees working at the stores after the deal is finalized.
Budwey’s has been owned and operated by the Budwey family for the past 86 years. Budwey’s opened in July of 1922 with Saltonia Budwey, the grandmother of current owner, Frank. She opened the first store in North Tonawanda on Oliver Street. James Budwey, Frank’s father, took over the store from Saltonia in 1936. Frank, the third generation of Budwey’s, took over the store in 1971.
