After Closing Its Doors, St. Louis' Haas Baking Files For Bankruptcy

A year-and-a-half after closing its doors, Haas Baking Co. has filed for bankruptcy.

Haas opened in 1925 in Soulard and later moved to Affton. The company known for its Gooey Butter Cakes shut down in early 2012, citing declining sales and rising ingredient costs. The company made cakes, sweet rolls and doughnuts sold at grocery stores before it closed.

Haas filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition in St. Louis Wednesday, listing between $100,000 and $500,000 in estimated assets and between $1 million and $10 million in estimated liabilities.

Its largest creditor is the Bakery & Confectionary Pension, which has a $4.6 million unsecured claim, according to court documents. Other creditors include Wiese Planning and Engineering, Mid Continent Paper, and International Paper.
