FruitShare.com, an online delivery service that ships premium organic fruit direct to offices and homes nationwide, is participating in the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon taking place at HHH Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN, this weekend. To help spread the word to families about the company’s philosophy on eating well and exercising, FruitShare.com will give away The ABCs of Nutrition, Learning the Alphabet the Healthy Way, a playful children’s book that explores the alphabet through fruits and vegetables, at the Family Activity Tent.
In the book, each alphabet letter represents a character of the VEDGE (Vigorous, EDucated and Good Eating) Kids performing a physical activity. For example, O for Orange shows a VEDGE kid in the meditation pose in yoga, or F for Fig is jumping rope, R for Raisin is skiing, etc.
“Companies use FruitShare.com to support their wellness programs and healthy gifting,” says the company’s founder, Everett Myers. “At home and in schools, we know that parents want to get their kids off to the best start possible in life, and choosing fruit for snacking is a proven winner every time.” Myers believes that The ABCs of Nutrition helps support parents and kids in making healthy choices from an early age with its fun and colorful fruit and veggie alphabet.
FruitShare.com will also be including the book as a premium to its customers with young families.
Rob Orchanian is the publisher/writer of the book and is another advocate of introducing healthy food options, such as fruits and vegetables, to children early on in life. “Our goal is to get toddlers on the path of good eating and exercise through storytelling in a fun and exciting way,” says Orchanian.
Orchanian reveals that the book was a family collaboration. The father of five children is married to a yoga instructor, and the couple raised their kids to eat lots of produce. “We all exercise regularly and eat right!” says Orchanian.
Many studies show significant correlations of obesity and “metabolic programming” (the concept that the early nutritional and lifestyle experience of an individual leads to determinative programs in their health status later in life). Orchanian is proud to be a part of a culture determined to try new tactics for introducing fruits and vegetables to children and addressing the obesity epidemic, which has now surpassed smoking as the No. 1 risk factor for disease and death in the U.S.
