Bi-Lo and Matthews-based Harris Teeter dig the pig.
The companies announced Thursday that they plan to purchase 29 Piggly Wiggly locations in South Carolina and Georgia. The locations, seven purchased by Harris Teeter and 22 by Bi-Lo, will close briefly and reopen under their new banners.
Harris Teeter is acquiring three stores in Charleston, two in Mount Pleasant, one on Kiawah Island and one of Isle of Palms. The move will double the number of Harris Teeter locations in the Charleston area.
And the acquisitions will give Harris Teeter more Charleston-area stores than its Florida-based rival Publix Super Markets, which operates 12 grocery stores in the area. Publix has been moving into Harris Teeter’s home turf in North Carolina with the opening of a Charlotte-based division.
