Package Bag Color Found To Impact Plantain & Banana Postharvest

Bogotá D. C. – Agencia de Noticias UN – A UNal research project demonstrated that that color of plastic packaging speeds up the ripening process for bananas and plantains, therefore reduces or increases fruit loss.

For UNal researcher Ivón Andrea Ussa Leal, efficient postharvest management is a key factor for successful marketing of these fruits. Especially to preserve quality and modify the speed in which they acquire their commercial maturity.

Ussa studied the incidence of these packages in warehouse stored fruit post-harvesting quality in normal temperature and relative humidity conditions.

At 4-day intervals she assessed weight loss and length, diameter and skin color, total soluble solids and total sugars, some of the main quality parameters.
