BLUE RAPIDS — At the front of Gator’s Hometown Foods in Blue Rapids is a grocery cart packed with sweet corn and a display rack of tomatoes, cucumbers, beets, peppers and onions.
The fresh produce is grown locally — and doesn’t last long on the shelves once customers know it’s there.
“Local is great, but fresh local is even better,” said Steve “Gator” Gaydusek, owner of the grocery. “I’ve always sold local produce. I’ll take everything I can get.”
Gaydusek said he buys sweet corn from Jake Byers, of Waterville. As soon as he posts on Facebook that Jake’s Corn has arrived, consumers show up.
“We will have people who drive an hour for it,” he said.
